'becca has formed a new addiction to The Office. over the past two weeks, she has watched the first four and a half seasons through netflix.
'becca had a ridiculous dream last night that included yelling at someone who insinuated that crocheting wasn't as 'real" of a yarn art as knitting.
'becca wishes her laundry would do itself.
'becca has misplaced her good scissors.
'becca has guests coming this weekend, and she's so excited.

ice cream
i love ice cream. chocolate chip cookie dough. moose tracks. dark cherry fudge truffle. cookies and cream. peanut butter cup. oatmeal cookie (by ben & jerry. seriously. so good.) i used to love nerds blizzards from dairy queen, but they don't make them any more. they do make a very tasty strawberry golden oreo blizzard, though. yumm-o. and at coldstone creamery? peanut butter cup perfection (with sweet cream or cake batter ice cream, not chocolate) or cherry loves cheesecake. mmmmm.
i do not like chocolate ice cream. i like vanilla ice cream with hot fudge. i like vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. but i do not like chocolate ice cream.

32 goals
here we go. :)
1. finish The One With 31 book: i kept the book current throughout the year. it just needs a few finishing touches and a little binding.
2. create a book to track my 32 goals: two years ago i started making books to track my birthday goals. it's fun. and nerdy. what could be better? :)
3. watch all netflix-available Vincent D'Onofrio movies: Vincent D'Onofrio is my Law & Order: Criminal Intent hero, but i've only seen him in a couple of movies. netflix has 41 of his movies available.
4. watch half of marlana's movies: i'm sitting here looking at her movie collection. i've not seen a lot of them. i should rectify that. i mean, what if they're crappy movies? i might need to rectify that, too. ;)
5. finish watching all netflix-available episodes of The Office: i might be developing a new addiction.
6. watch Law & Order: Trial by Jury: it only made it one season, but it's a L&O series. i gotta see it.
7. post items on etsy: i have an etsy account. this year, i need to actually post some items and see if i can make some sales. it needs to be said that this goal scares me. :)
8. plant vegetables: i'm thinking a variety of tomatoes, some purple carrots and possibly some radishes.
9. play every game in the house: i thought about making the goal to win every game in the house, but that just seemed mean. and marlana does have a tendency to kick my butt.
10. decorate my bedroom: i have part of the artwork started, and i have a final vision for the room. why is it that the bedroom is last room to be decorated? it's like that on all the design shows, and it's so true!
11. cut my fabric stash in half: i've got a lot of fabric sitting around. i'm pretty sure it feels very neglected.
12. finish a quilt front or back: i know, it sounds like it relates to cutting my fabric stash, but this is different. i have fabric that's specifically earmarked for quilts - that's not technically part of the stash. the stash is the fabric with no defined purpose. this goal is about using the purposed fabric for its defined purpose. because it's neglected, too.
13. cut my yarn stash in half: i've got a lot of yarn sitting around. i'm pretty sure it feels very neglected.
14. complete a pattern from ravelry: i just set up my ravelry account today. it's full of knitting and crocheting patterns, some of which are free. and i've already got my eye on several of them.
15. finish the tree scarf: i'd like to have it on the tree before it seems silly to put it on the tree because it's warm again. although, if that happens, i can just wait until the fall to put it on the tree, right?
16. make some jewelry: i've got a lot of beads sitting around. i'm pretty sure they feel very neglected. :)
17. save money for a stand mixer: i really want a stand mixer. in a flashy color. yeah, i'd sacrifice some counter space for a flashy stand mixer.
18. try six recipes from Baked Explorations: i got this great book for my birthday. it will sweeten my kitchen for the year to come.
19. use my madeleine pan: i also got a madeleine pan for my birthday. here's hoping i can accomplish french pastries that are lighter than air.
20. use my tart pan: i got a tart pan for my birthday, too. yay!
21. make injera: injera is a tasty ethiopian bread that i was introduced to at jody & boz's dinner. so tasty.
22. use my ice cream maker: dave gave me an ice cream maker a couple of months ago, but i haven't used it, yet. that's gotta change!
23. make pierogi: mmmm. mushroom pierogi. and potato and bacon pierogi. yum.
24. succeed at meringues: i've tried making meringues on several occasions, and it's always ended in failure. this year, i will conquer the meringue!
25. eat pizza at Bazbeaux: i went to Bazbeaux for a muffaletta once, and their pizza looked amazing. now that i'm living in indy, i'm pretty sure a taste test is in order.
26. end the year weighing less than i do now: i'm not setting a specific weight goal this year, but in 12 months, i will weigh less than i do right now. and yes, i know i just listed a bunch of food-related goals ... but i can do them all and still lose weight. because i'm magic.
27. regrow/replace Bill: so i decided to cut Bill down to nubs so he could regrow into a healthier plant. so far it's not going so well. so ... if he doesn't come back, i'll replace him. :)
28. paint Bill's pot: it's a terra cotta pot against a deep orange wall. you see the problem, right?
29. read an autobiography/memoir: my favorite type of book. :)
30. fast from the internet for three consecutive days, twice: this includes not watching streaming netflix.
31. send mail to my nieces: they should learn to love mail early in life. :)
32. make christmas cards AND send them: that's right, i'm aiming high. make AND send. all in the same year.

strangest food i've ever eaten
calamari. i know it's a common food, and i really like it. but c'mon - it's strange to eat a tentacled sea creature that's been battered and fried to perfection.
or maybe black & white pudding, which is like a bread sausage. both black & white are made the same, except the black has pig's blood added for color & moist-making.

blog maintenance
so in the past, i've created a new blog each year. it's because i wasn't using blogger's template, and i was publishing via ftp instead of to a blogspot address. so i had to force the archive links. anyway ... that's not an issue now that blogger doesn't support ftp publishing, and i've started using a blogspot address. so, now i think i can get away with just rearranging the archive links to match the ordering that blogger gave 2011 and 2010.
i should double-check when i'm supposed to renew my domain, too. i think that's ... tomorrow. yeah.
aren't you glad today's a free day and i've been given free reign to say anything i want?
on a different note: i may be forming an addiction to The Office.

tow31: final tally
interested in hearing how i did on this year's goals?
1. watch 31 johnny depp movies: done! thanks to the joy that is netflix i watched every movie available to me before Alice in Wonderland premiered in march. yup. i watched 35 johnny depp movies in less than a month. it was a good month. :) grand total: 38 johnny depp movies.
2. read 31 chapters: done! i finished this goal fairly early in the year, but my summer vacation really pumped up my final number. it was nice having no job and plenty of time to read. grand total: 446 chapters.
3. go 31 days without watching Friends: done! and on my first try - impressive, no? okay, in fairness i stopped watching Friends while i was watching all the johnny depp movies. but still ... i did it. grand total: 32 days.
4. make 31 new recipes: done! some of my favorites were the lemon rice soup (both recipes i tried), stuffed strawberries, parmesan puffs, chocolate chip zucchini muffins, pasta fra diavolo, pork puertorriqueno, curry roasted chicken and peanut butter bacon cookies. grand total: 44 new recipes.
5. prepare food for someone else 31 times: done! and even without gaining a roommate to cook for, i would have met this goal. grand total: 38 preparations.
6. take 31 photos a day for 31 consecutive days: done! and (thankfully) on my first try. some days were much easier than others, but i got it done. grand total: 31 days.
7. send 31 pieces of mail: done! thanks to a couple of bulk mailings this year, i soared right past this goal. grand total: 89 pieces.
8. blog 31 days in a row: done! i've actually blogged every day since october 4. grand total: 113 days.
9. watch 31 episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent: done! as soon as the johnny depp movies were done, i started in on CI. in less than a month i had the goal accomplished, but i was only on season 2 and i do love vincent d'onofrio. so i watched all six seasons available on netflix. and then, (even though this doesn't count towards the grand total) i watched all eleven seasons of SVU. and i tried the original series from the beginning, but it was too hard to get into. i did watch the entire series of the spinoff Conviction, which was really good. and i'd like to watch L&O: Trial by Jury and UK, too. all in good time. :) grand total: 133 episodes.
10. watch 31 Friends episodes in preparation: done! i don't have an exact date for when i finished this or an exact number of episodes i watched. for some reason, i didn't keep a running total when i started the series over again after my fast. i think it's probably safe to assume i watched the entire series at least once this year, but maybe not. when i re-started the series in august i kept track, and it took me almost three months to watch 31 consecutive episodes. that's when i realized how hard it was for two of us to watch the series on the same dvd player at different paces. so i've quit trying to watch them in order. i watch whatever disc happens to be in, and i'm okay with there being gaps between the episodes i watch. i've still got pages of good notes for a Friends party. now i just need the people to invite. :) grand total: somewhere between 31 and 331.
11. take 31 photos of the same object or scene: done! this took a different turn than i expected, but it was so much fun! i ended up making a couple of stop-motion videos. it was a good time. grand total: 737 photos.
12. do 31 things i've never done before: done! some were fun, some were scary - but it's been a good year. and there may be things i've forgotten, or didn't realize were firsts. but i'm pleased. grand total: 35.
13. lose 31 pounds.: nope, but i'm okay with it. really. know why? because i did lose weight this year. and i'm starting this year lighter than i started last year - so i didn't just lose weight to gain it all back. and i'm starting back onto the weight watchers system, which makes me feel good for paying attention to what i'm eating. it's a process, and this year was successful. grand total: 18 pounds.
14. drive 31 miles on US Route 31: done! grand total: 92 miles.
15. go 31 days without meat: haha. yeah ... i like animal. it's tasty. grand total: 5 days.
16. make 31 pieces of jerky: done! i thought i'd have to concede defeat on this one since i gave away my food dehydrator, but i found a pretty nice way to dry out meat in the oven. grand total: 33 pieces.
17. sew 31 seams on a quilt: done! without a stitch wasted. ;) grand total: 31 seams.
18. take at least 3100 photos: done! grand total: 3967 photos.
19. play a 31-game series of Phase 10 with liz: done! and we finished about as close as possible. i was one phase ahead and had 100 point less. she won 15 games; i won 16 games. so i won, but it could not have been much closer. crazy! grand total: 31 games.
20. fill 31 holes: done! i don't know how many holes the photo wall left. but they're all filled in now, and that's what counts. :) grand total: a few more than 31.
21. make use of 31 photos from Ireland: not quite. i got 18 into my photo album, and i have a plan for more as part of the bedroom art project. but that project is currently on hold. grand total: 18 photos.
22: play 31 notes on a musical instrument: done! i pulled out my cornet and flubbed my way through parts of an old band solo. and then i flubbed my way through some piano music over christmas. it was fun. grand total: 3331 notes.
23. ride 31 miles on my bike: ha! i did pull my bike out, but it needs some work done on the tires. they're not holding air so well. grand total: .84 miles.
24. scan 31 old photos: i was going to do this while i was home for christmas, but i did not. grand total: 0 photos.
25. go 31 days without leaving dirty dishes in the sink for more than 31 hours: done! and one the first try. :) grand total: 49 days.
26. list 31 positive points about my job: done! i wrote these down little by little, though the majority came when i turned in my resignation. in fact, number thirty-one was "not having to ever go back there again. :)" grand total: 31 positive points.
27. give 31 handmade gifts: i gave several handmade gifts. crocheted animals, cross stitched art, coiled magazine bowls, felt owls ... and i love having been able to give every one. grand total: 22 handmade gifts.
28. finish Christmas presents at least 31 hours early: done! i had the gifts done and wrapped in plenty of time. (even if i did leave two of the gifts at home! grand total: 36 hours.
29. print 31 photos for the photo album: done! grand total: 31 photos.
30. print 31 more photos for the photo album: done! grand total: 31 photos.
31. print another 31 photos for the photo album:done! these last three goal brought me from spring 2007 to summer 2010. no, not quite up to date ... but definitely better! grand total: 102 photos.

as the picker of the topics, i'm sure it might look like i rigged today's topic to line up with my birthday. indeed, i did not. i thought about it. but when this one came up naturally, i figured i'd just go with it. :)

favorite book of all time
"i'm feeling rather disheveled and slightly crooked.
(i seem to be seeping out at the edges.)"
"i often feel an overwhelming pressure to 'have it all together'
what is 'it'?"
"i have been feeling so blank and full of muted tones.
i feel just sort of beige."
"the truth is we all ache.
we all have growing pains
and wonder if we are
okay and enough & loved.
the thing is - we are.
really.
without the silver shoes
and leopard print sheets.
we are enough without
all the things we buy
to make us much more
than we are or need to be
we are simple
and complex
and rare
as is."
- Sabrina Ward Harrison, Spilling Open (the art of becoming yourself)

april and i met over a bag of Dolphins & Friends (think goldfish crackers shaped like dolphins & whales) and a shared eye roll directed towards the theater majors causing a ruckus in the arts building. we bonded through photography classes, and together we endured the ridiculousity that was abnormal psych. and that philosophy class we took. ooo, both philosophy classes we took. yeah. yikes. we spent three good years together in college, and i missed her dearly when she graduated.
when i got out a year later, and she said there was an opening at her office, i jumped at the opportunity. sure, i wanted a job in the design field, but i was really excited to get to hang out with april again. and as luck would have it, our job allowed us to hang out a lot. i mean, seriously, we spent a lot of time together over the next nine years.
and you know what? i'm not sick of her yet. ;) i miss her terribly. i miss seeing her five days a week. i miss her funny expressions and her balancing paper on her head. i miss her mad design skills and our bonzai design sessions (don't think, just do). i miss hearing about her weekends - you know, that small stuff that you don't really share unless you're sitting next to each other all day at the office. i miss photo days! and photo lunches! discussing color schemes. and web sites.
april's amazing. she's beautiful, she's talented, she's funny as all get out. she's an awesome shopping buddy. (i miss shopping trips!) and she's strong. probably much stronger than she gives herself credit for. and i love her very much.

my smallest canister
i got beautiful fiesta canisters for christmas. i have flour and sugar in the two largest canisters, but what to put in the small one? it's a little small for powdered sugar, brown sugar or coffee (a full container wouldn't fit, and why have part of a container in the cabinet? that defeats the purpose of having canisters). i thought about using it as a cookie jar, but it wouldn't hold a big enough batch of cookies to make it worth it.
so ... what would i like to always have available to me that would fit in that canister?
- chocolate candies
- chocolate chips
- beef jerky
- dill pickles (they sit out on the counter at delis, so it must be safe, right?)
- peanut butter
- peanut butter mixed with chocolate chips
- those little pastel-colored mints that are shaped like chocolate chips & have the white candy balls on them

early spring?
yesterday, as i was driving to town, i noticed a lot of robins hanging out in the neighborhood. a lot. i mean, it's january - i wouldn't expect to see any robins, but they were in almost all the trees. once i got into town, i spent some time checking out the trees around the main square. i was expecting to see birds there. (it's warmer near the main square - the trees there already have leaves.) but i wasn't expecting to see a baby owl. or a piglet. the piglet really surprised me.

first pet/current pet
our first pet was a little black party poodle named Cannonball. why? because she was a little black party poodle, and when she curled up in a ball to sleep - she looked like a cannonball. yup, the naming process was that sophisticated.
currently i have no pets. there has been some discussion about getting a dog, but as of yet there is none in the house. i'm okay with that. i like the idea of having a dog, but i also like the idea of not having to buy it food or pay for its shots. and having a pet is slightly counterproductive when one's goal is to avoid responsibility as a means of facilitating spontaneous travel. :)

dangerous wedding
so i was at a friend's wedding last night. he was wearing this ridiculous sweater vest (sorry, buddy, but it was ridiculous), and to make it worse he started shooting the guests at the reception. when the guests started to flee, his friends started shooting more of them. when guests made it out of the room, they were faced with more shooters. when they made it to the stairwell, yup, more shooters. the plan seemed to be shooting every one in attendance. at one point i was lucid enough to realize i may have watched too many episodes of 24 before going to bed.

monopoly
i have loved the game monopoly for a very long time. i've even claimed it as my favorite for a very long time. but the truth is - it's been so long since i've played it, i don't even know if i'd enjoy it anymore. that's sad, isn't it?

erin
junior year, around thanksgiving. wait. no, i can't tell you about that.
senior year, around christmas. no. wait, i can't tell you that either.
well, there was her graduation party. afterwards we ... yeah, i can't tell you that either.
one time we ... nope, that didn't happen.
we DID go out one night and ... no, no we didn't. we wouldn't do that.
ummmmm. i'm not sure erin and i have ever spent any time together. yeah, i'm pretty sure we've never even met. erin who?

funny memory, parts 2 & 3
junior year of high school, erin and i were in my basement. (that just made me think of a second story. but first, the first. or second, if you consider the one i posted earlier the first. yes, first the second.) it had been a crappy day, and we devoured a container of Laffy Taffy like it was our job. between the sugar high and the ridiculous jokes on the wrappers, we were laughing so hard we were crying and literally rolling around on the floor.
senior year of high school, erin and i were in my basement. (now do you understand the connection?) we roasted tiny marshmallows over votive candles. we pasted photos of our least favorite musicians to a dart board. we shared Laffy Taffy jokes that were undoubtedly only funny because they reminded us of the above story. and we videotaped the whole thing.

a memory that makes me laugh
technically the topic called for my favorite memory that makes me laugh. i've learned over the past couple of months that topics that call for a stand out (favorite memory, most embarrassing moment) are not ones that i completely enjoy. it just requires so much thought. and judgment. and ... well, i change my mind a lot. so even if i truly had a favorite right now, it would change by next week.
for this topic, however, i had something come to mind fairly quickly. i don't remember how old we were - high school? college? i was sitting in the kitchen with my mom and my brother. my brother was doing something humorously irritating (i don't remember what, but i remember it was humoring me as much as it was irritating me), and i had a glass of ice water sitting in front me. i asked him to stop; he did it again. i asked him to stop again; he did it again. and each time he did it again he grinned just a little bigger. finally i told him that if he didn't stop i was going to throw my glass of water at him. he did it again, with an even bigger grin.
as he wiped the water off of himself, his response was something like, "well, you did tell me you were going to do it." we were both laughing pretty hysterically at this point. i'm not sure either of us believed i'd actually throw the water at him. but it was a good time.

my christmas decorations stay up until ...
this year they stayed up until my roommate took them down, for the most part. that's the advantage of her having put them all up while i was out of town - she used all her own stuff, so she took it all down, too. :) i had a few things up, but they came down when hers did - even if they did just get put away yesterday.
usually i'm ready for the christmas decor to come down about two days after christmas. i like having it up before the holiday, but i'm done with it once it's over. i don't mind keeping up some winter decor (like the big snowflake hanging in the office), but the christmas-themed stuff needs to come down in a timely manner.
and don't judge me, but i kind of want to decorate for valentine's day.

if i could have any job in the world
i would want to own and run my own business. i think a bed and breakfast would be great fun. i would want a victorian home with grounds to support walking paths, a gazebo and gardens (both flowers and vegetables). i'd love to have it situated along the water, preferably a rocky coast, but along the bank of a quiet stream would suffice. :)

currently taking suggestions
my birthday is in less than three weeks. any suggestions on goals i should set for my new year? you've seen my previous lists (linked below) - the goals span the scale of ridiculous to serious. i'm not promising to put your suggestions on the final list, but i am promising to take them into consideration. :)

tattoo preference
i planned to get a tattoo on my first trip to san francisco. i'm not completely sure why i wanted to do it there (as opposed to at the tattoo parlor down the street from work), but maybe it had something to do with independence or rebellion or that high that comes from going on vacation. regardless, i perfected the sketch while we sat in the airport waiting for the snow to stop so our plane could depart. it was an ichthus with "hanani" underneath. hanani means "god is gracious" - and it also happened to be the prominent lyric in a song that the o.c. supertones had recently released.
i did not get that tattoo. in the end, i remembered that tattoos are applied by needles, and i don't like needles.
now if i could get a tattoo licked on by kittens ...

favorite quote
nothing immediately comes to mind. i like a lot of quotes. people say many things that are funny, witty or meaningful. and when those quotes are in front of me, i smile, laugh or feel inspired. i might plan to remember them so i can continue to enjoy them. i even have a book of quotes that i started collecting when i was in high school. but to just pull one out of my memory as a favorite? this is not my forte. (forte. i played piano this past week for the first time in years. it was fabulous. i miss having a piano to play.)
probably my most-quoted movie line is "i'll be back, and you'll be sorry." so if quantity of usage counts, that must be my favorite. i don't feel particularly fond of it, though. it just happens to have a lot of opportunities for use.
i quote a lot of lines from the tv show Friends ... but they're really just the product of over-saturation of the mind.
on a completely different subject, i'm going to have to find a way to reorganize my board and card games. with the new additions from christmas, they'll never all fit in their currently alloted space. i'll add that to my list of things to do on my day off tomorrow.
back on task. let's pull out that book of quotes and see if we can find any gems, shall we?
the world would be a better place if every one had a goldfish.
definitely one we should all take to heart.
nobody's ever gone blind by looking at the bright side of things.
i wonder if this has been scientifically studied.
people will notice your feet if you wear two different socks.
i've tested this one. it's true.
my brother has the brainpower of creamed corn.
okay, i didn't say that myself, and these are a little ridiculous ...
when will you begin to understand that being normal isn't necessarily a virtue?
and my favorite has been chosen.

childhood snuggly item
i don't remember having a must-have snuggly item as a child. so, let me tell you what items i do remember.
i had a stuffed pig named petunia. she was taller than i was, and i was probably 3. my mom and sister used to tell me they were cooking her for dinner.
i had a teddy bear that i must have snuggled with quite a bit considering how much love he shows. when i was 5 he was named tim. when i was 10 he was named kevin. my guess is he had a name before i was 5, but i don't remember that.
i don't remember having a bedtime penguin pal. but if i had one, i'm sure his name was hugsie.

resolutions, part 2
so i found a list online (which means it has to be true, of course) of the top 10 new year's resolutions. what are they? spend more time with family and friends, fit in fitness, tame the bulge, quit smoking, enjoy life more, quit drinking, get out of debt, learn something new, help others and get organized.
i'm not making any of those resolutions.
i won't be making any of these 12 easy resolutions either ... but you should read them and laugh. :)

resolutions i should make
- sleep more. maybe even on a regular schedule.
- eat healthier by incorporating more fresh veggies, less doritos.
- start an exercise routine.
- include my bum wrist in the exercise routine to combat carpal tunnel.
- do something new every day.
- learn to pilot a commercial jet.
- work more Friends references into my daily conversations & blog posts.
