squeaky wheel
i was interrupted at work by a gal who wanted me to stop what i was doing and ring up her purchase. i obliged, setting aside what i was working on and opening up a register. i really needed to finish what i was doing, but customer first, right?
then she giggled.
and as she unloaded her cart, she prattled on about how she was learning to be the squeaky wheel at church and how she couldn't wait to tell her church group how well it had worked. she was positively giddy and so proud of herself.
now i'm not sure if during this exchange she realized that the other cashier was literally two minutes away from being able to help her (in fact, by the time i'd gotten what i was working on closed out and fired up the register, the other cashier had her guest out the door). or if she stopped to think that maybe i was in the middle of something and not just ignoring her. i doubt she did. i think she saw a chance to test her ability to be the squeaky wheel and get what she wanted. after all, that's what she's learning about at church.
i don't know what to do with that.

Huh. i would really love to hear context on this one. Sounds to me like her pastor is teaching her that in order to get what she wants, she should be obliviously obnoxious-- or at least, that's her interpretation of his teaching. Find me that in Scripture. i hope that he's not actually teaching her something along the lines of "the first will be first," but you never know anymore. Way to advertise your church's alleged cultural buy-in, you giggling woman. And... if the "squeaky wheel" teaching was an effort by the pastor to dial down his passive-agressive congregation, i don't think it's working.
I am also interested in what religion teaches this story of the "squeaky wheel?". Of all the major religions, I can't quite figure out where that would fit in to a spiritual teaching?
I'm so confused. Even if you take out the fact that she's learning about this at church, how is she being a "squeaky wheel" by expecting special treatment and not waiting in line like everyone else? That's not being a squeaky wheel. That's being obnoxious and arrogant.
amen marlana. if there were fifty people in line and only one register, i call her actions okay. but... she's just a jerk.
